Can I Connect Eee Pc To My Desktop To Share Optical Drive?
ByI am thinking of getting an eee pc as a travel / work laptop but don’t like the fact there is no optical drive, will I be able to easily link it up with my desktop and use the dvd drive in the desktop to load things on the eee pc.

I have an eee pc and I have bought an external DVD reader/writer to plug in when I need it via USB, this works well.

Hey,
Well this is indeed very possible if you create a network between your two computers (You may need a cross over cable). Connect a network cable between your Eee Pc and your desktop. Make your optical drive shared on the network. From the Eee PC you need need to go to the shared drive of your desktop. First you need to find the computer name of your computer.
Right click on my computer –> properties –> Computer name tab and then check full computer name. This is very important. From the Eee pc assuming you have windows xp, so go to Start –> Run –> type in “\mycomputername” this will show you all the shared folders and drives that are currently available on your desktop, right click optical drive and add to your Eee pc. You can also add it in from My computer –> go to Tools –> Map network Drive –> type in \mycomputernamethenameoftheopticaldriv… and add it in.
There are a number of ways to do this without having to buy an external usb optical drive. Cheers

You can get eee pcs or other netbooks with a hard drive usually for only a little bit more than one with a solid state drive and you can always transfer files using a USB.

You can probably easily transfer the files between, but don’t expect to use the drive in real time with your eee pc.
